Brief History of the Blue Flower

Written by Sister Lita Alvarez

Since the beginning of our Honorable Apostolic Assembly, women have felt the burning desire that the gospel of Jesus Christ needs to expand worldwide and for that reason they worked different projects. At first we helped Dorcas generally raising offerings for our missionaries abroad. As sister Lita Alvarez said, in 1968, we sponsor a missionary assigned: Roberto Saavedra, and each member of Dorcas feminine societies, with love and proudly brought the amount of $ 5.00.

Thank God for women leaders who were the pioneers of many of the projects for which we work today. Sister Lita Alvarez, who, like our predecessors, was a great leader who loved the Lord and was passionate about winning souls to Him, she sought a way for the Feminine National Confederation of Societies Dorcas progressed. Sister Alvarez was invited by missionary Saavedra to visit and help in the mission field, Sister Alvarez, as a single mother thought it was not possible to make that trip, because she had a family to support, and even contemplated the idea of visiting the mission field. One day as she prayed came the thought: “You don’t have to go there, you can help them from here where you live!”

In the same year, the veterans began selling yellow flowers in memory of the fallen soldiers at war; Miss Lita was shocked to read the news from the newspaper: “One Million Dollars raised through the sale of the Yellow Flower”, while Red Cross was selling red flowers for their cause. She says she began to pray and tell the Lord what I can do?, I want financially help our missionaries! Immediately came the thought: “we too can do the same: Sell a flower!” Now I need a color, … suddenly thought: Blue is the color of men and fishers of men missionaries are called by God, the water, representing the wide sea is blue, so … the color BLUE!

national boardAt General Convention held in Phoenix, AZ in 1968, Sister Lita asked to be allowed to offer flowers in exchange for a donation to our missionaries: that empress collected a total of $ 16.00 in donations.

In 1972, While being national president. Mary Fraijo, she suggested us to continue selling the blue flower to financially assist our missionaries, the proposal was approved and established that this project proceed. There she formed the first national committee for the project of the Blue Flower. The money then would be sent to meet the missionaries as a special gift for Christmas.

In 1973 the project was adopted by the district federations and was first officially received their input which was $ 777.34. This offering was divided among all the missionaries and sent as a Christmas gift.

Over the years the contributions being increased and our Brother Presiding Bishop Lorenzo Salazar, who also was a missionary, I request that this money will be used not only for Christmas, but will be used in the various needs that missionaries and their families had such as transportation, housing, the church remodeling, construction, medical or any emergency that missionaries and their families may have.

“Project Blue Flower” raises funds for the support and backing of our Foreign Missions Programs. We currently have 29 missionaries around the world who are supported by the diligent work of the National Confederation of feminine Dorcas Societies of the Apostolic Assembly of the Faith in Christ Jesus.
